So I get that you’re a teacher, but what do you think about homeschooling/homeschoolers? I was homeschooled, and I like to think it was pretty good for my family, but some of the teachers I’ve talked with over the years since graduating reacted like I told them I killed puppies for fun.

wtfteaching:

I think the shock will depend on where you are, to include mostly what the overall culture is and the stereotypes about the school system. For example, if someone were to say, “I’m homeschooled” to me in Korea, I’d be surprised because I’ve only ever met one student that had this situation. It’s incredibly rare for a variety of reasons, so I’d be surprised.

If it was in, say, the US, then the reason many parents these days choose to homeschool (or so the stereotype goes) is due to religious reasons…mainly, they “don’t believe in” scientific concepts like evolution or “basic human functions” like sexual education and health classes, so they pull their children out of school to teach them in their religious way. If you’re in a western country, this is likely why the teachers reacted negatively, most likely wanting to ask, “So did you get an actual education or a religious education?” but not knowing how to ask such a question.

Another stereotype that was around when I was a kid (so it might still linger in my generation) is that homeschooled kids are “weird and not socialized properly”, which might make them wonder if they have to tiptoe around you in terms of phrasing and behavior.

If I was in your shoes and got that face, I’d say, “I couldn’t help but notice your expression…do you have any questions about my homeschooling? I’d be happy to answer them for you.”

Hope that gives you some ideas and insight!
