I’ve worked in dog care for about 4 years now. 3 of those years were at a huge kennel that fits almost 300 dogs (the one where they have to stay in small cages for days at a time). While i absolutely love my job, there is one thing that really boils my blood. There are owners there that board their dogs for months at a time, specifically, FOOTBALL PLAYERS (wont name any names) from a certain D.C. based team that literally abandon their dogs. Like holy cow fuck you guys. Why get a dog, and then leave that poor creature in a 6×6’ pen for HALF A FUCKING YEAR. Most of the times, they tell us theyre dropping them off for a month or so, and then we wonder why they’re there 6 months later. Why not just get someone to watch your dog at home??? Don’t you all make hundreds of thousands of dollars?? Oh THATS RIGHT! YOU CANT because your dog wants to rip everyones throat out because theyre territorial. You know why that probably is? Because he stays locked in a 6×6 pen for the majority of his life. When the poor dog isnt growling and snapping, hes crying and screaming until he goes hoarse. At night, right before we leave, he settles down and will press his body against the fence so we can scratch him through it. It’s heartbreaking. They arent bad dogs, but theyre all nuts from being neglected.
Trust me, i don’t like making assumptions about owners based on what i see with their dogs. Some dogs bang themselves up, or dont gain weight easily,or are just narurally scared of everything. It’s impossible to know what’s happening in their home, but surely if you love your pet you’re not going to leave it in a loud scary place for half a year at a time?? Like some customers will leave their dogs there when they’re moving out, or something stressful is going on in the home and the dog cant be there, but they visit their dogs almost every day?? It just breaks my heart.
Also i seriously doubt that the owners are gone for months on end since they play home games, so why not bring your poor pooch home for a few days at a time at least.
If you don’t have time for a dog, then you dont. Deserve. A. Dog.
