If the Abrahamic God was real, would you worship him?

atheistforhumanity:

This is a great question, thanks for asking.

Would I worship the  Abrahamic God?

Let me point out that if this deity did exist, his existence does not equal an obligation to worship him. This is where the debate over free will gets really interesting. Intellectuals like Sam Harris argue that we do not have free will in the sense that our lives are predetermined by genetics and circumstance. He says that the factors that control us are just too subtle and complex to perceive. Let’s assume for a moment that this is true.

If I do not have free will then the question is moot. I will do as I am predispositioned to do (let’s say not.) Then I will have made a choice to go against this all powerful being at no fault of my own, but I will be punished all the same.

The Bible states that we were sent to Earth to be tested and those that use their free will to worship God be allowed to re-enter heaven. (Verses on Free Will: 1 Corinthians 10:13, Genesis 2:16-17, Deuteronomy 30:19-20) But the Bible also refers to God having a plan and even controlling what humans will do. (Predestination:
Jeremiah 1:4-5,
Isaiah 43:1-7,
1 Corinthians 2:1-7) So according to the Bible I could either be or not be capable of actually making the choice. It’s kind of a mind fuck really.

Let’s assume I do have the choice. I would absolutely NOT worship this God. The reasons are pretty simple really. God is a genocidal monster that wipes out human life the way we step on ants. That doesn’t inspire me to worship this being in any way.

Christopher Hitchens famously called heaven a celestial North Korea. There are uncanny similarities. Most important, all the people are forced into worshiping their leader by threat of violence, and in the case of God that would be eternal torture. I could not imagine a more narcissistic and sadistic act. I am being literal when I say that not even Hitler was so evil.

If God was a moral being in any sense of the word then not only would he never present humanity with such a degenerate ultimatum, but he would never have created Hell in the first place. A loving God would use his infinite power to either vanquish the Devil or render him harmless to humanity. Furthermore, he would nurture and guide our existence. Instead, according to the Bible, he sets us up to meet impossible standards due to our primitive nature and then cruelly punishes us for the obvious outcomes to our actions. He bullies us and incites fear like a sociopath, and never provides us with anything useful or insightful. If you take the prophet’s words, then he has regularly ordered genocide, racism, slavery, fascism, and a host of nonsensical laws.

If such a being were to really exist, I would count him among the most mentally stunted and morally depraved forms of life in all the universe. No. Given the Bible as evidence, I am inclined to think that Lucifer was absolutely justified in rebelling. For it is Lucifer that imparts knowledge and encourages freedom. I would rather take up arms with him to fight a greater evil than to bow to a murderous megalomaniac from beyond the stars.
