school anti-bullying programs are stupid and fail to address actual issues and refuse to acknowledge that a lot of bullying is rooted in discrimination. back in elementary school (around 4 years before I actually came out), someone in my class made up a rumor that I was a lesbian/bisexual and for months I got bullied by my peers for it, I had homophobic slurs thrown at my head every single day right in front of my teachers. and did they do something? no. they just stood there and let it happen. when I would tell them in tears that i’ve been called a d*ke, they just told me to ignore it and told the kids they had to ‘stop being mean’. at no point did they address the homophobia or even tried to teach the kids about it, they just followed the standard ‘anti-bullying’ procedure. these programs push the idea that kids just get bullied for being ‘outsiders’ or because they’re ‘different’, but they refuse to tackle the actual reasons behind it, and that’s what I think is so sad.
