I work in an extended stay hotel and I have a couple things to say to anyone looking to stay in a hotel:
- More than one person can sleep in a bed. I know… SHOCKING… but NO. You do not need the giant two bedroom suite for your family of 4. You don’t even need the 1 bedroom. You will do just fine in the studio with one queen size bed and one full size pull out couch. It’s one night…. Deal with it.
- Check. Your. Room. Size. Before. You. Book. Do not book the studio if you want the 2 bedroom. You will get to the hotel and be put in a studio. I cannot change your room unless I have availability.
- If you have pre-paid for a hotel room, what in the fuck do you expect the front desk person to do about your reservation not being what you want? How the fuck can I extend it? How can I change it? What do you think I can do? You fucking PAID FOR IT ALREADY
- Third party reservations are literally evil. First of all, those third party websites are getting a much better rate than they charge you. Stop using a middle man. Call the cheapest hotel they’re showing and book directly. But second of all, as I have just mentioned, I CAN’T CHANGE ANYTHING. It is SO MUCH SAFER for your travels for you to be able to plead with the front desk about something you need like an extended trip or to cancel. What happens when you cancel from a 3rd party is they call us and ask us about a penalty. We are far more likely to be sympathetic if we know you.
- Talk to your front desk person and be nice to them. They are your gods in the hotel.
- KEEP. YOUR. KEY. CARDS. AWAY. FROM. YOUR. PHONES. for the love of god it’s a magnet
- In a small hotel, past 6ish when the housekeeping staff and managers leave, it is likely the front desk person is the only staff member in the hotel. BE PATIENT. also…. Just… be respectful. If I tell you I don’t have a maintenance person and ask you if you’re okay waiting until tomorrow or if you’d like to switch rooms, DON’T BITCH ABOUT IT… I cannot make a maintenance person appear. calm down.
- Pay attention to your hotel’s housekeeping policy. Our policy as an extended stay is to only provide “light touch” housekeeping daily which is clean towels, making the bed, and taking out the trash which we do Monday-Friday and Saturday and Sunday on request WITH 24 HOUR NOTICE. A full cleaning of the room with clean sheets is done 7 days after check in…. If you are unhappy with that, do not book that hotel.
- Hotel shuttles are not your personal free taxis. Please plan accordingly.
- Housekeeping is not your personal private maid. They have to clean every room in the hotel. Be nice to them and they will help you if you need it. Don’t scream and throw a fit. They know you want your room clean…. but they have a lot to do and you’ll SURVIVE.
