one fear: Christians who believe in climate change but support it because they want the world to end for religious reasons

do these people actually exist??? please tell me you just made this up.

My grandfather was one. I don’t even know if it’s a specific sect or what – he was Bulgarian->Greek Orthodox but I have also heard it from Protestants and Pentecostals. It’s not usually presented as “environmental destruction is good!” but as “environmental destruction isn’t bad because the sooner the world is thrown into unlivable chaos, the sooner Christ will rise again, and that’s good!”

Yup, the church attached to the school I went to is like that.

Before Y2K these were the premillennial dispensationalism.  They’re basically a death cult version of religion that believes they are charged with the responsibility of bringing about the end of the world to force the return of Jesus.

Part of their thing is to do what they can to cause the destruction of Israel to start the count timer for Revelations to go from back of the book reading into a Live Action Religious Play.

Which, y’know, as a death cult doomsday game plan seems a v. bad plan, because assume for a moment that you succeed, and you have to face down Jesus ‘King of the Jews’ Christ and that yahweh of “God’s chosen people’, and explain “Oh yeah, caused ‘em all to get killed so you’d show up and lavish me with rewards”

Cos I’d soon try turning Cthulhu into a seafood basket than open that conversation.

The last poster stated that premillenial dispenstionals are essentially hellbent on the destruction of Israel and the world in general. That’s not true. While Premils do believe that the Jewish people are no longer God’s chosen people (remember that whole unbelief and wandering the desert for 40 years thing? or the whole setting up crucifying the Messiah thing?), they still in general support the Jewish state as the Book of Revelation and the Prophets state that God still has plans for them and will be providing a redemption opportunity for a large number of the Jewish people. Not to mention that the Good Book has dozens of examples of Gentiles being blessed when they show mercy/kindness/etc. to the Jews.

Most Pre-mils won’t actively seek a way to hasten the End Times. In fact, according to Premillennialism they won’t even be here as they will have been “taken up” or Raptured by Christ before the Millennium begins. That’s where they get their name. It has nothing to do Y2K- what we think of as the “New Millennium”, but rather the Millennium in which Christ reigns on Earth after the destruction of Satan.

Before you ask me how I know this, I have a degree in Biblical Studies.
