forwhatweleftbehind:

thirteen reasons why (not)

(why not to watch the show, why it was absolute shit, why not to blame people for your death and so on)

1. if you are not enough for yourself, then you are not enough for yourself. it’s Not other people’s responsibility to fill that internal hole for you.

2. it should never. ever. ever. be on your friends to keep you safe. never. ever. ever.

3. by equating suicide w the inability of other people to be there for you, it’s implied that suicide in general can always be prevented if you just love someone enough. which is Not the case at all.

4. also! why! are! we! only! using! white! girls! to! exhibit! mental! illness!

5. in the end, it is ultimately your decision and yours alone to end your life, regardless of others’ actions that brought you to that place.

6. fundamentally, you do not get control after you die. in death you surrender every active role you had in people’s lives, and while you still impact them, you do not get to manage things anymore.

7. there is legitimately nothing good that could ever come out of blaming specific people for your suicide. you ruin them and you ruin yourself and no one heals or is given the chance to be forgiven or become better.

8. it’s never ok to use suicide as a form of revenge, let’s get that fucking straight.

9. does it even need mentioning that the equation of rape, bullying, someone’s lack of romantic initiative, and counselor’s inability to give you exactly what you needed to hear, is dead. wrong. those things are Significantly different and should not be held each to the same level of theoretical responsibility for hannah’s death in the show.

10. worth saying again because somehow this isn’t clear to a lot of people: in the end the final decision to end your life is your and yours alone.

11. applicable only to the show itself but what. sorry. what the actual fuck was supposed to be accomplished by having hannah kill herself onscreen. any suicide-prevention initiative of the show was completely destroyed in that inclusion. yes, we absolutely need to talk about suicide but jesus christ that Was Not the way to go about starting the conversation.

12. is it that hard to make a single show about a mental illness that does not romanticize it to make it look like something pretty! real life mental illness is in no way pretty! stop making it into a club that hands out flyers and tries to recruit people! does anyone get how fucked up this is!

13. whether you have 13 or 13,000 reasons why you want to kill yourself, it is Not The Answer. it is never the answer, no matter who you are or what shit you’ve been through. you’re here reading this and you made it through today and you just might be one of the reasons that someone else is staying alive, so stick around, friend. let’s come up w reasons not to kill ourselves instead of reasons why we did.
